What is GSTR-1?
GSTR-1 is a statement of outward supplies that every regular GST-registered taxpayer must file, detailing invoice-wise sales to registered and unregistered persons, exports, credit/debit notes issued, and amendments to previously reported supplies. The data filed in GSTR-1 flows into the recipient's GSTR-2B, forming the basis of their input tax credit.
Who needs to file GSTR-1
- Every regular GST-registered taxpayer must file GSTR-1, except taxpayers under the composition scheme (who file a different, simplified return) and a few other specifically excluded categories.
- Taxpayers can file GSTR-1 monthly, or quarterly under the QRMP (Quarterly Return Monthly Payment) scheme if eligible, as per GST portal rules.
What GSTR-1 contains
- B2B invoices (registered-to-registered sales), B2C large and small invoices, exports, credit and debit notes, advances received, and an HSN-wise summary of outward supplies.
- Details filed here are largely auto-populated or used to auto-populate other returns, including GSTR-3B's auto-drafted summary and the recipient's GSTR-2B.
Common mistakes
- Mismatched invoice details between GSTR-1 and the books of account or e-invoice data, causing reconciliation issues.
- Missing the due date, which can trigger late fees and affect the recipient's ability to claim ITC on time.
- Not reporting credit/debit notes in the correct period, leading to tax liability discrepancies.
