What is GSTR-3B?
GSTR-3B is a simplified, summary-level GST return that most regular taxpayers must file each tax period, declaring a consolidated summary of outward supplies, inward supplies liable to reverse charge, eligible input tax credit, and the resulting net GST liability payable. Unlike GSTR-1, it does not require invoice-level detail.
Who needs to file GSTR-3B
- Every regular GST-registered taxpayer is generally required to file GSTR-3B, including taxpayers with nil liability for a tax period (a nil return).
- Taxpayers under the QRMP scheme file GSTR-3B quarterly, while paying tax monthly via a challan, as per the GST portal's rules.
How GSTR-3B relates to GSTR-1 and ITC
- The portal auto-drafts part of GSTR-3B's outward supply figures using data filed in GSTR-1, and the available ITC figures using the auto-populated GSTR-2B generated from suppliers' GSTR-1 filings.
- GST payment for the period is made while filing GSTR-3B, after offsetting available ITC against the tax liability.
Common mistakes
- Filing GSTR-3B figures inconsistent with GSTR-1 data for the same period, which can trigger notices for reconciliation.
- Claiming ITC in GSTR-3B that exceeds what is reflected in GSTR-2B.
- Missing the due date, which attracts late fees and interest on any tax paid late.
