What is ESI?
The Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme is a social security and health insurance scheme for Indian workers, run by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) under the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948. It provides medical care, and cash benefits during sickness, maternity and employment injury, funded by contributions from both employer and employee.
Who it applies to
- Factories and specified classes of establishments employing a minimum number of persons (as notified by the state and ESIC) are generally required to register.
- Employees drawing wages up to the ESIC-notified wage ceiling are covered; once wages cross the ceiling, coverage generally continues only until the end of that contribution period under ESIC's rules.
- Coverage extends across most states and union territories, with ESIC maintaining dispensaries and hospitals for covered employees and their dependants.
How ESI contribution and benefits work
- Both employer and employee contribute a percentage of wages, at rates notified by ESIC from time to time — check esic.gov.in for the current applicable rates.
- Benefits include medical treatment for the insured person and dependants, sickness benefit, maternity benefit, disablement benefit and dependants' benefit in case of death due to employment injury.
- Employers register each covered employee for an ESIC Insurance Number and file contributions through the ESIC online portal.
Common mistakes
- Not re-checking wage-ceiling coverage when an employee gets a mid-year increment that crosses the threshold.
- Missing the contribution due date, which can attract interest and penalties under the Act.
- Failing to register new employees for ESI before their first wage payment.
- Confusing ESI (health and cash benefits for lower-wage employees) with EPF (retirement savings for a broader wage band) — they serve different purposes and have separate wage ceilings.
