What is gross salary?
Gross salary is the sum of an employee's basic pay plus all allowances and additional pay components (HRA, special allowance, conveyance, bonus, etc.) earned in a given period, before any deductions are subtracted. It appears as a line on every payslip and is distinct from both CTC (which also includes employer-side costs) and net salary (which is after deductions).
Gross salary formula
Gross Salary = Basic Pay + House Rent Allowance (HRA) + Special Allowance + other taxable allowances + bonus/incentive for the period.
Net (take-home) Salary = Gross Salary − (employee's PF contribution + professional tax + TDS + other deductions).
Worked example
If an employee's monthly basic pay is ₹30,000, HRA is ₹12,000 and special allowance is ₹8,000, gross salary for the month is ₹50,000. After deducting the employee's PF contribution, professional tax and applicable TDS, the net salary credited to their account will be lower than ₹50,000.
Common mistakes
- Confusing gross salary (before deductions) with CTC (which also includes employer contributions not paid to the employee as cash).
- Leaving out variable/bonus components when calculating gross salary for a specific month.
- Using annual gross salary figures when a monthly comparison was intended, or vice versa.
